Number 10 showdown...

Messi v Rooney.pt 2

No sooner had one battle been won v Cristiano Ronaldo, in being crowned as the best player in the world, Lionel Messi had another to face thanks, in no small part, to the Italian & British media who have now championed Wayne Rooney’s case against the mercurial little Argentine.

The two number 10’s will come face to face on the 28th May when Barcelona take on Manchester United at Wembley to battle for European club football's biggest prize, the Champions League. Whilst both Barcelona and United are searching for their fourth European Cup victory overall, Rooney will be aiming to win his second - Messi, for his hat-trick.

It’s a repeat of the 2009 final that took place in Rome, when Barcelona ran out easy 2-0 winners. On that day, Messi came face to face with both Rooney, and at the time, the FIFA World Player of the Year Cristiano Ronaldo. Messi was the victor, scoring and going on to depose Cristiano of the crown in standing alone as the best player in the world, winning the FIFA and UEFA Player of the Year awards in both 2009 & 2010. Can he repeat the feat?

With Real Madrid and, Ronaldo again conquered, only Rooney stands in his way. Sky Italia have billed it as the "Best player in the world v Most complete player in the world."

Is Wayne Rooney really the ‘most complete’ player in the world? Or is this just unnecessary media hype in helping build up what should already be an intriguing European final?

With too many unambiguous measurements to take into account in what defines the ‘most complete’ player, fantasista10 will just choose to settle for the ‘best’ player in the world – and that mantle resides clearly with the Barcelona number 10.

  1. Only whiskey nose himself would consider this a contest as Messi is already both the 'best' and most 'complete' player in the world. Last time the "experts" said that "he couldn't score against English opposition" and "was very poor in the air". Hmmm ... let me remember how that one turned out! Hopefully this time it will be "he can't score hatricks/ 40 yard wonder strikes/ overhead kicks". With a bit of luck they'll say all three.
