the miracle of Istanbul...

Six years ago to the day was the scene of probably the most amazing European Cup final in the competitions proud history, when Liverpool defeated AC Milan on penalties to win their 5th European Cup.

3-0 down and outclassed by half-time, the reds somehow managed to turn the game on its head, scoring three times in six ‘crazy’ minutes to amazingly draw level when all hope had seemed lost. Extra time and penalties ensued, and it was Liverpool who held their nerve to lift the famous trophy, becoming the 3rd most successful side in the competitions history.

Wednesday evenings of the past were always reserved for club footballs show-piece event, but now that TV and the money men have their way (pleasing UEFA president Platini’s hare-brained scheme), the final has now been moved to an unfamiliar Saturday slot.

Still, our memories will never fade, especially when remembering Wednesday 25th May 2005 in Istanbul.

Was this the scene of the greatest European Cup final ever? Or even the best final, full stop, ever? Add your thoughts below...

Ps Platini...bring back our Wednesday night spot!
